  • Conquering Deer Mountain on Snowshoes

Trip Length: Approximately 6 miles
Summit Elevation: 10,013 feet
Elevation gain from Deer Mountain Trailhead: 1,210 feet
Summit Date: 05 February 2018

Hiking or snowshoeing from the Deer Ridge Junction trailhead in RMNP is one of two ways to experience Deer Mountain. The Beaver Meadows or Fall River Entrance of RMNP provide you quick access to the trailhead. There is limited roadside parking, but you can find parking.

The first mile passes through a wide grassy area open enough to provide views of all the Continental Divide Mountains to the west and part of the Mummy Range. Keep an eye out for all the mule deer in this area. The snow depths were minimal, but there were a few icy spots.

Mile two takes you over the western side of Deer Mountain with a healthy series of switchbacks. Here, the open field transitions into a semi-dense forested area consisting of Aspen, Spruce, and Fir. As you pass through, don't forget to take in the aroma! The snow depths began to increase as you make your way into the forest, not so much that you would want snowshoes, but having gaiters over your boots really helps.

The top of the ridge levels off then descends a bit, before finally ascending toward the summit. Remember this section once you're down and can again admire the unique shape of Deer Mountain from afar. The last push to the summit affords you the chance to get your heart racing as you climb up the steep trail.

The summit is wide, rocky, and drops off to a steep cliffside, providing excellent views of all of the Continental Divide Mountains as well as the town of Estes Park.

Descending back to your car requires you to follow the same trail you walked in on.

This is great hike for those trying to acclimate themselves to higher elevations. The trail is easy to follow even with snow on it. The payoff is one of the best views of the continental divide peaks.

Happy Trails Everyone!
